Our Mission
|
The mission of WELCOME, Workplace, Education and Literacy Coalition of Mohave County, is to provide literacy education to motivated adults through the efforts of dedicated volunteers, the gifts of private contributors and the use of specialized curriculum to meet individual and community needs.

By definition, a functionally illiterate adult has less than an eighth grade education and the basic skills for only minimal survival. The 1993 National Adult Literacy Survey, sponsored by the National Institute for Literacy, found that over 50% of American adults do not have the skills needed to survive in our modern economy.
Through our member organizations, more than 500 students are served each year at teaching sites and through outreach programs. Generally, services are free to students, who pay only for books.
Students work individually with specially trained volunteer tutors in three main program areas: Adult Basic Education, English as a Second Language, and High School Equivalency Preparation. Tutoring is scheduled based on the individual needs of the student.
